QR Code Best Practices
A well-designed QR code is easy to scan and provides a good user experience. Below are practical guidelines that improve scan rates and reliability.
1. Minimum Size
For print, the QR code should be at least 2 × 2 cm (about 0.8 inches). Larger codes are required when viewed from a distance (posters, billboards, etc.).
2. Landing Page
Link to a mobile-friendly page. Desktop-only sites force pinching and zooming, which discourages users.
3. Contrast and Placement
Use high contrast between the code and its background. Avoid placing codes over busy patterns, folds, or reflective surfaces.
4. Call to Action
Include a short instruction next to the code (“Scan for menu”, “Scan to download”, etc.). People scan more when they know what to expect.
5. Security
Always use HTTPS links. Shortened or obfuscated URLs can reduce trust.
6. Testing
Test the final code with multiple devices (iPhone, Android, different lighting conditions) before printing or publishing.
